The flag features a traditional Osage Nation buffalo-skin shield with seven eagle feathers against a sky blue background. Two symbols of peace - a calumet (pipe) and an olive branch - lay across the shield, and six white crosses on the shield represent high ideals. The blue field comes from a flag carried by Choctaw soldiers during the Civil War.
